This class is very fun! We learn about things you would never think about, such as how lucky we are and how other people are living. I think that this is a great class and it's very thought provoking.

Our Assembly
40 Global Issues Students lined up, backs of chairs facing the audience, everyone wearing a hoodie, and face down. Mr. Chemelik held the silence for peace. The music started playing. In the bold stage lights, forty 'gangsters' danced to the song 'Where is the Love'.
I think that we did well promoting peace day. It was a great because it was interactive and I think people enjoyed the dance. It was a good promotion and when everyone was teaching their homegroup the dance, I think that was the best part because it was so fun to watch our homegroup teachers try and follow along and it was fun for the Global Issues students to teach people the dance. It was great for the promises to the peace day website. We sold cookies and had face painting, I think that it was very peace promoting. We had lots of people came in to make promises and we made about 600$ for peace day.
I liked the assembly because it was fun trying to do the dance. I think that it was really great doing this. It helped people and it also helped us become more excited about doing peace day. 3rd World Farmer Reflection
In the game Third World Farmer, it was life perspective game. You could see life from the point of view from a third world farmer. You start with a family of four, and 50$. Then, you can begin farming. So while you’re farming, you’re faced with problems that people will have if they are in extreme poverty. You are also faced with shock factors, such as war, and corrupt government.
My strategy is that when I start out I with one crop, it was usually the cheapest, such as corn. I read that it was the steadiest crop so I used it. Then after I sold everything hoping that the corn would not have a problem. That would usually get me about 100$ after that I would spend around 10$ on medicine for my family to keep them healthy. Then I would spend more on a variety of crops and hope that nothing bad would happen.
A short term decision is a decision that will affect your basic needs. Such as where to get food, water and shelter. When to get water and food. Things like that.
It’s often not a good thing, because if your daughter(s) are walking 6 hours to get water because of the short term decision, then they won’t get an education, and they won’t be able to afford a well because they’re walking a long way and then they’ll be tired after they walk so long, and they can’t help out on the farm and then you can’t have a surplus of food, meaning not enough money, then you can’t buy a well for water, and then it’s back to the beginning.
People in poverty never have enough choices. If a rich first world farmer were to move, he’d have a huge choice in where to go and farm and make a lot of money because he already has the money to build a farm in a great place with rich soil and he’d also have the money for technology such as a tractor, which cuts down the work. However, a third world farmer would never have a choice on where he wants to have his farm. He also doesn’t have the choice of having to work less or more because of tools. The fact that the third world farmer doesn’t have a choice in where he can get his food unlike the the first world farmer does, is one of the reasons why the third world farmer is stuck unlike the first world farmer who has the time and money to things like that.
Things that could help them make money, such as a cow if you’re a farmer, or something to sell if you’re not. If they had the money then they could obtain there basic needs, and then they could get their kids an education, if they had any, and that would get the family out of poverty.
A long term decision is when your faced with a choice that will either bring you into poverty, further into poverty, or out of poverty. Such as education. If you spend too much money on education, and more then you can afford, then you’ll be too poor to afford anything else, if you spend money on education and you couldn’t afford to do that, then you’ll be in trouble. But if you spend money on education and it gets you out, then it’ll be good because soon you’d be out of poverty with an educated person as head of family.
They are good because you have a chance of getting out of poverty.
It’s increased the standards of living by more educated people, higher standards.
I learned about things such as shock factors, I learned about how corrupt government really affects the poor people.
Live Ethically- because we need to understand other people and how they are living. If we understand each other we could help each other.

Peace Post
The big idea I got from the video was that there are more people who are wanting to make a change. Some people are fighting for their lives. Whilst others have many reasons to fight. A few weeks ago, I asked someone "Is it bad to kill someone if someone is about to kill you and your family?" It took them a while to reply but they said" Killing someone is a horrible thing. It's one thing to kill someone for no reason, but if you're killing someone so you can defend yourself and people you love, it's another thing." I thought about this. It had changed my way of looking at this. I used to think everyone was fighting because they were becoming provoked. Just like little kids, they were both to blame. "THEY STARTED IT" shrieks one side. "ONLY BECAUSE THEY STARTED IT" screams the other. Now I know that there is only one attack, and people defending themselves. I am glad that some there are people who really care about this world. It means a lot to some people that they aren't the only ones who are worried about what happens if the war will come their way. It's like a stone being dropped into the water. It's impossible to stop hope. Just like in Greek Mythology. As Pandora opened the box, everything horrible came out in the world, but when Pandora thought everything was lost, hope arose out of the box. I think this is like a symbol. After everything horrible in the world will be thrown out of no where, hope will arise.
Peace is very important. About a day ago, I went to the 24 Jam. There were many skits, but one of the skits really reminded me about war. It was called "Just A Little History Repeating Itself." It started out with many people lying down on the ground, some with there legs curled up to their chests, and they're faces were down. Slowly, 5 or 6 people came walking down the aisles. They gently came to the people who were wrapped themselves into tight hugs. At first, they were horrified at the touch of the people, but slowly they moved on to the people on the floor, lying in positions as if someone had killed them. Then they formed groups. The problem was, there were remaining people. Two people left their groups and came to the outsiders. "WALK!" the barked at the remaining outsiders "CRAWL" they repeated commands to the people over and over again. A girl tried to stand up for herself, but quickly was thrown out. She sat down again, and curled herself into a ball again. Meanwhile the other groups were marching, making themselves strong by linking themselves together. After 5 minutes of this, the two people who had been in command bellowed "ATTACK!" As if the outsiders had been in pain as they moved stiffly, they attacked. Breaking up the groups. At first, they had no success. The links were too strong, but soon everyone broke up and walked in pain. Sadly, they all threw themselves down as if the pain was too great. It wasn't supposed to be about peace. It was supposed to be what would happen if the everyone in the world died. But I saw it as a symbolism of war. This is why peace is so important. If we didn't have peace, we would be killing people, and eventually emotionally and physically killing ourselves with guilt, grief, diseases. There would be no hope in the world. Peace is hope.
Peace is linked with development. I can prove this by using my project on Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso is a landlocked. It's a very small, poor country. It's surrounded with many large countries, making it an easy target to control. Or to take power. So, poor Burkina Faso has to worry about other countries taking over by force. They have many policemen, guards, and security. This is because there is no peace. Everybody is so worried about being taken over, or even being killed. They spend their money on guns, and weapons. They have many problems in Burkina Faso. AIDS/HIV is not the only problem. They have poverty and hunger. They don't have good infrastructure. This is why peace will lead to development. War tears places and people down. War takes the children away from their homes and uses them to fight, leading to a bad education, which leads us to a horrible new generation. With uneducated children, we have nothing left to bring us further in development.
The hidden costs of war. the first few obvious
1. Tearing families apart-when the Dads or Mothers die, children are left with nothing. They are left with no money or family
2. Killing of people- sometimes soldiers will steal people and threaten people
3. Dangerous for innocent- Mothers and Children are running, fleeing from their homes to be safe
4. Destroys land- the tanks will kill land, blood of people, hungry soldiers kill animals to survive
5. Cripples- some people are crippled physically by war wounds such as a gun shot
These are the Hidden Costs
1. Steals children's lives- As the kids in the document said, "their Childhood was stolen by war." They are taken to fight for something they might not even believe in
2. de-humanize - Corrupts people into thinking the worse about others
3. Kills many people who shouldn't have to die, fighting for or protecting what they believe in
4. Frightens- war will frighten many people into either being where they are, or worshiping how or what they may want.
5. Cripples- emotionally. Some people say they have seen things that they wish they had never seen.

Should I care about Global Issues?
I think I definitely should care about Global Issues, I am a child who is living in the world so I have to care about the world. If the whole world got wiped out, then what would I do? Some of these issues, I can help prevent. Such as recycling, I can I help by recycling what I use such as paper. This is important that I help do my part in this world. It's not just everyone over 18 who can help the world, I forgot who said this, but when I was looking through some quotes I saw this "If you think you can't do anything because you think you're insignificant, then you obviously haven't been in bed with a mosquito" -Anonymous. This is stood out, because you think that a mosquito is so small and tiny, it couldn't do anything bad. But it can, it can bite and pester you until you kill it. This is great because if you work hard you can achieve what you want to do. I think that I should care about Global Issues, because these problems not only apply to my parents, but to me.
I think Global Issues Class is for kids who learn about preventing about the problems but they can make a change. They also help other around them make a change. Kids who do Global Issues and try and help represent the the people who are no longer crouching and are in pain and with their eyes open and ready to touch peoples lives. I think that if we all try we can touch peoples lives and put them out of pain. We have a great school, which creates and supports fundraisers so we can help other people. This is a way we can help people, we can participate on tag days or on bake sales. We could also create fundraisers to people so that we can help other people.
